Mold, disgusting! Mold is nasty, dirty, and just plain bad for your health! If you suspect you have mold in your home, you should have an indoor air quality test performed as quickly as possible. This is a simple test that will tell you if you have a mold problem and what type of mold is in your home. This test will provide the results needed so that a remediation company (such as Complete DKI) may start working on your home. PLEASE NOTE: If a company offers to perform the air quality test AND the mold remediation, KICK THEM OUT! This is a huge conflict of interest and it is against Florida Law! Ethical mold remediation businesses will have a list of local, trust worthy air quality specialists that they can recommend.
Mold requires three things to grow. 1. For mold to flourish, the temperature has to be warm, usually above 78 degrees. In Pensacola, this is almost year round. 2. Mold will also need moisture. In Pensacola, the humidity supplies more than enough moisture to allow for mold growth. 3. Mold needs a food source! Mold will feed on any organic matter; dirt, skin cells, plant parts, animal hair, etc. If it is summer or spring, give the mold prone environment a few days, and POOF it’s everywhere! It’s really that simple. Mold is not something to be scared of but it is most definitely something to be concerned about. Unless you have in infant or elderly person in the home, no one is going to die tomorrow over black mold. With that being said, DO NOT let it fester. Mold, over a period of time can cause serious upper respiratory problems. Short term problems include headaches, sinus and allergy reactions and possibly feeling light headed.
***If you plan to make a claim for the mold damage in your home, act fast! While microbial growth (AKA Mold) usually has a $10,000 allowance in your homeowner’s policy, if the problem is a result of a lack of maintenance, the claim will not be covered. For example, you know that you have a problem with your shower leaking into the wall cavity. You do nothing to fix it, and 6 months later you make an insurance claim. It is likely that your claim will be denied. It is ALWAYS important to attempt to mitigate the damages the FIRST time you notice it.
